Local historian Robert Comeau will discuss the Six Power Canals of the Chicopee River, including the Collins Canal in Wilbraham.
From 1822 onward, the powerful Chicopee River has been dammed for canals to power industrial mills. Wilbraham had one of these canals-- the Collins Canal. The mill that used this canal produced cotton, then paper, and that mill still exists today.
Robert Comeau of Historical Tours of Greater Holyoke will discuss and compare the canals in Chicopee, Springfield, Ludlow, Wilbraham, and Palmer.
This presentation is part of a series called "Canals in the Connecticut River Valley of Massachusetts" and is funded by a state level Massachusetts Cultural Council grant.
